Bid the World Adieu: Preservation and Re-dedication of Kinderhook’s Persons of Color Cemetery
May 6 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Thirteen headstones next to the ball field on Rothermel Avenue are all that remains of this significant chapter in Kinderhook’s history. In mid-May, the Persons of Color Cemetery will be re-dedicated. Recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this site stands as the final resting place for perhaps as many as 500 of Kinderhook’s citizens. The history of the cemetery and how it came to be preserved will be the topic of a presentation by the Village Historian Ruth Piwonka and local volunteers who worked on this project. A brief meeting of the Friends of the Kinderhook Memorial Library will precede the program and refreshments will be served. All are welcome!
