SUMMARY:Politics\, Progress\, and Pubs in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:Going down to the bar for a pint is a tradition almost as old as beer itself\, but what Americans have done over the years in bars\, pubs\, and taverns is something that may have more to say about the history of this country than\, at first\, you might think.\nJoin us for a presentation by Kirsten E. Wood\, associate professor of history at Florida International University\, and an expert in the social and political histories of the early United States.\nAs Americans surged westward in the early nineteenth century\, entrepreneurial\, improvement-minded men went to taverns to raise capital\, promote innovative businesses\, practice genteel sociability\, and rally support for favored causes—often while drinking staggering amounts of alcohol. White men’s unrivaled freedom to use taverns in their pursuits of happiness helped flesh out the evolving meaning of citizenship in the young United States. Yet white men did not have taverns to themselves. White women and free Black men and women visited taverns as they traveled\, socialized\, and engaged in activism. Sharing tavern spaces with other Americans intensified white men’s struggles to define what\, and for whom\, taverns—and the nation–should be.

SUMMARY:The A-OK Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this slightly ridiculous but super fun town-wide scavenger hunt for grownups to benefit library programs for children and teens! Grab a friend and make a team of 2 to 4 people and scramble around the Town of Kinderhook while finding or creating the most random assortment of items. Gather at the Library at 3:00pm for the start of the hunt; once you get your list of clues\, the race is on! \nAll clues must be received by the judges by 5:00pm at Tequila Sunrise. After that\, enjoy a meal (included in the cost of the ticket) and drinks at their cash bar. While you’re enjoying the food and meeting rival teams\, our judges will be hard at work tallying up the scores. At the end of the evening\, we’ll announce the winner and runner-up and distribute prizes! \nTickets are $75 per person\, and all proceeds will go to support our youth services at the Library. This includes our new one-on-one tutoring\, our summer reading program\, and our Battle of the Books teams. Tickets can be purchased using the following link and are nonrefundable.

SUMMARY:The Woman with Fifty Faces
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with Kinderhook Books to bring you a fantastic dialogue featuring the author and illustrator of the new graphic novel The Woman with Fifty Faces \nin 1928\, Maria Lani blew into Paris claiming to be a famous German actress and proceeded to seduce the cultural elite with her undeniable charisma and strangely enticing aura. She persuaded fifty artists to immortalize her in paintings and sculptures\, which would appear as an important plot device in a forthcoming film. Unveiled as an exhibition in New York\, the art works traveled to Chicago\, London\, Berlin\, Rotterdam\, and Paris. But\, in 1931\, she and her husband Max Abramowicz vanished without a trace\, and so did the art. The film was never made. \nThe Woman With Fifty Faces is about uncovering as much of the truth about Maria Lani as possible. The images that cascade through the book are stunningly beautiful\, deeply compassionate\, and farcically grotesque\, capturing the essence of Lani’s life. From Poland’s antisemitic pogroms to the vulgar glamour and decadence of 1920s Paris to the Nazi occupation of France in the ’40s\, the tumultuous Europe Lani traverses becomes nearly as much of a character as Lani herself. Jonathan Lackman spent two decades researching Lani’s life and Zachary J. Pinson spent 5\,000 hours putting pen to paper.

SUMMARY:Banned Books Club
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers for our Banned Books Club! This insightful program is a chance to explore the novels that have been making headlines in recent years due to challenges in schools and public libraries across the country. Each month\, we’ll be reading one challenged title and discussing not only the stories\, but the controversy surrounding them as well as the broad concept of censorship. \nJoin us for a discussion of Patricia McCormick’s 2006 novel Sold. Told in a series of haunting vignettes\, SOLD is a harrowing account of a sexual slavery. Alternating lyrical imagery with precise detail\, McCormick gives voice to the terror and bewilderment of a young girl robbed of her childhood but who finds the strength to triumph. \nThis program is made possible through a generous grant from the Mid-Hudson Library System.
