DESCRIPTION:We are excited to host local writer Kristina Labaty at our library to celebrate National Poetry Month (and her birthday)! Kristina has had a fascination with poetry as long as she can recall and relishes the opportunity to share her written explorations with us. She will be sharing poems from various phases of her life and discussing her works and craft. Light refreshments will be served. \nKristina is an avid reader of poems and enjoys sharing her passion with those around her. At Camphill Ghent\, where she lives and works\, Kristina leads a poetry group and a related speech choir. On a weekly basis\, the group reads and writes poems and prepares spoken word offerings for holiday celebrations. She also very much enjoys hosting The Poetry Caravan: a local group of poetry readers and writers who tour around sharing poetry. \n

DESCRIPTION:On April 8th we will have a fantastic view of the solar eclipse\, and we are ready to celebrate! Join us at the Stuyvesant Town Hall for a viewing party\, where we’ll have free eclipse glasses to share amongst ourselves as well as refreshments and crafts for kids? \nWhat if it’s a cloudy day? Well\, we won’t let that stand in our way: come down for a fun party regardless\, and we’ll live-stream the event indoors! \nThe eclipse will reach its maximum coverage at 3:26pm\, so be sure to arrive prior to that. While we are distributing eclipse glasses at the library\, we have 100 on reserve for this party\, so there will be plenty to go around!

SUMMARY:Landscaping with Native Plants
DESCRIPTION:When European settlers came to the Hudson Valley\, they missed their native cultivars and brought them here to plant in their gardens. As a result\, an estimated 80% of ornamental nursery plants are non-native species that do not support local food webs and can become invasive. By planting natives\, we can increase biodiversity and reduce the risks associated with invasive species. In this talk\, Master Gardener Frieda Pierce will review the insights provided by Douglas Tallamy\, discuss native gardens\, design elements\, and plants that can be used to restore the ecosystem in your yard.
