Maria Ausherman presents three artists featured in her Absolutely Amazing American Artists children’s book series. Sarah Miriam Peale, one of America’s first woman artists, followed the example of her artistic family and painted national leaders. Whether hiking by the sea, in the woods, near a river, or in her backyard, Fidelia Bridges painted pictures of birds and flowers, many of which became the nation’s first greeting cards. Elise Forrest Harleston, South Carolina’s first African American woman photographer, was the first woman in the nation to co-own a portrait studio with her artist husband.
