Thanks to a collaboration between the Village of Kinderhook and the Friends of the Library, we have three beautiful Little Free Libraries (LFLs) in our community! When you visit Rothermel or Mills Park, keep an eye out for these special cases that contain free books to enjoy for the day or take home to keep.
You might wonder: where do these free books come from? Thanks to the dedication of Friends of the Library council member Wendy Power Spielmann, these LFLs are continually stocked with gently used titles. Wendy maintains the Friends’ bookshelf in the library, located opposite our meeting room; with the many donations the Friends receive, the LFLs offer a new way to ensure these books wind up in the hands of children who appreciate them!
Youngsters often meet Wendy as she is refreshing the collection at the Little Free Library. “It gives me such joy to witness their excitement,” said Wendy. She noted also that the LFLs were heavily used by the summer camp children and counselors. Being able to reuse and redistribute these books is just one more way that we are operating as a sustainable member of our community, and we are very grateful to our Friends group and the Village for their collaborations with us!
